Topsoil (Screened)
Our topsoil is a premium blend of native farm loam and our own high-quality compost. You get the fertility of organic matter with the structure and workability of loam — a dark, rich soil that’s screened to ¾" or less for easy spreading.
Best For
- New lawn installations (final grade + seed bed prep)
- Garden bed preparation
- Tree & shrub planting
For lawn establishment, we recommend ~3" of new topsoil. It gives seed a consistent, nutrient-rich layer to root into and helps smooth out minor grade issues before you seed.
Spring Tip
For spring lawn projects: spread and grade your soil, seed, then keep the surface consistently moist until germination. Avoid burying seed too deep — a light rake-in is usually all you need.
Compost (Screened)
Our compost is a nutrient-rich soil amendment made from locally collected leaves and clean yard waste, carefully decomposed and screened to ¾" or less. It’s completely natural, contains no sewage sludge or municipal waste, and is safe for all garden and landscape applications.
By improving soil structure, boosting water retention, and supporting beneficial microbes, compost helps Connecticut gardeners grow healthier plants and bigger harvests — from thicker lawns to brighter flower beds and even prize-winning vegetables and pumpkins.
Ideal For
- Vegetable gardens: enrich planting beds with organic matter for stronger yields
- Raised beds: blend into soil mixes for balanced fertility
- Lawns: topdress thin turf to improve thickness and color
- Flower beds: improve soil for brighter, longer-lasting blooms
- Tree & shrub planting: amend backfill soil to encourage rooting
Compost Tips
-
1Garden beds: spread 1–2" and mix into the top few inches of existing soil before planting.
-
2Raised beds: compost works best as part of a blend — mix with quality soil to avoid a bed that’s “too hot” or too soft.
-
3Lawns: for topdressing, apply a thin layer (¼–½") and rake in so grass blades can still breathe.
-
4Mulch substitute: a light compost layer around plants can improve soil over time (leave space around stems/trunks).
Screened Fill
Our Screened Fill is a standard subsoil material made by processing Clean Fill through our screening equipment. The result is a fine, workable dirt containing small stones no larger than ⅝" — no big rocks, and much easier to handle.
Ideal For
- Raising grades and filling low areas
- Backfilling and base material before topsoil is added
- Easier handling projects: no large stones, simple to move with a shovel or wheelbarrow
Keep in mind: Screened Fill is subsoil, not a growing medium. If you plan to grow grass or plants, finish with a surface layer of about 3" of Screened Topsoil to provide the nutrients and structure needed for healthy growth.
Garden Mix
Our Garden Mix is a premium 50/50 blend of screened topsoil and organic compost, with an organic 9-0-5 slow-release fertilizer blended in. It’s a ready-to-use mix that combines compost fertility, loam structure, and long-lasting nutrition — giving plants a strong foundation to grow healthier and more productive.
With balanced fertility, a slightly acidic pH, and strong organic content, Garden Mix is designed to drive vigorous growth and bigger yields across a wide range of plantings. It’s a “repeat customer” blend — customers and employees have seen standout results using it year after year.
Perfect For
- Vegetable gardens: build rich beds for higher yields
- Raised beds: balanced mix, ready to plant
- Flower gardens: promotes vibrant color and extended bloom
- New plantings: supports establishment of trees, shrubs, and perennials
- Soil improvement: rejuvenates tired or sandy soils with organic matter
Garden Mix Tips
-
1Raised beds: fill and plant right away. Water thoroughly after planting — organic-rich mixes settle a bit.
-
2In-ground beds: spread a few inches and blend into existing soil to improve structure and fertility.
-
3Moisture management: compost helps hold water — avoid overwatering early on. Aim for consistent moisture, not soggy soil.
-
4Mulch finish: top with mulch after planting to reduce evaporation and keep beds more stable through summer heat.

Clean Fill (Unscreened Subsoil)
What Is Clean Fill?
Clean Fill is an unscreened subsoil commonly accumulated from foundation digging on construction sites. It often contains a mix of soil and rocks (some can be quite large), which is why it’s ideal for projects where you need volume and stability — not a finished planting surface.
Best Uses
-
1Deep fills (over 12"): great when you need a lot of material to bring up grade quickly.
-
2Raising grade / rough leveling: use it as base material before adding finished topsoil.
-
3Base under pads & heavy-duty areas: roads, equipment pads, and similar projects.
Important Notes
From Unscreened Fill to Finished Screened Fill
In this clip, we’re screening subsoil with our Warrior 1800 screener. You’ll see the difference between unscreened fill and the finished screened fill (the end product after screening). Each material has its place — this side-by-side makes it easy to understand which one fits your project.

How Our Compost & Soil Products Are Made
We operate one of Connecticut’s most established organic recycling and composting facilities in Milford. Each year we recycle high volumes of leaves, brush, and clean yard waste and transform it through a carefully managed aerobic composting process. Piles are turned, monitored, and cured until they break down into stable, nutrient-rich compost.
Finished compost is then screened to 3/4" or smaller, producing a dark, earthy amendment that’s ideal for lawns, vegetable gardens, flower beds, and tree & shrub plantings. That compost also becomes the backbone of our in-house soil blends, including screened topsoil and garden mixes with consistent quality control.
