Decorative Gravel in Connecticut (Paths, Beds, Driveways & Drainage)
Decorative stone is a clean, low-maintenance alternative to mulch — and it’s one of the best ways to upgrade curb appeal fast. Grillo Services supplies popular decorative gravel in CT including pea stone, native rounds, and large river rock (river jacks), used for pathways, planting beds, parking areas, and drainage swales. Order online for pickup or select delivery during checkout.
Which Decorative Gravel Should You Choose?
Pea Stone (3/8")
Comfortable underfoot, great for walkways and patios. Can migrate without edging; best in contained areas.
Native Rounds (1/2"–1-1/4")
Clean decorative “river-style” look for beds and borders. Medium sizes tend to stay put better than pea stone.
River Jacks (1–3" / 2–4" / 3–6")
Large river rock for drainage swales, around downspouts, and feature beds. Excellent where water needs to move.
High-end Specialty Stone
Premium stones (gold/white/red variants) for front-of-home beds and commercial landscaping where appearance matters most.
Depth & Coverage (How Much Do You Need?)
For most decorative stone installs, a finished depth of 2–3 inches is typical. Going too thin exposes fabric and looks unfinished. Going too thick wastes stone and can make the area unstable.
- 2 inches: light cover / refresh over an existing stone bed
- 3 inches: standard install for most beds and borders
- 4+ inches: only for deep swales or heavy-flow drainage areas (usually larger stone)
Example: 500 sq ft at 3" → (500×3)/324 ≈ 4.6 yards
If you’re not sure on the final depth, order slightly short and top up after it settles — especially with smaller stone that shifts during installation.
Installation Tips (So It Looks Clean in 3 Years Too)
Edge first. Stone needs containment. A clean edge is what keeps it from becoming “gravel everywhere.”
Prep the base. Remove weeds and loose organics. If it’s muddy now, it will be muddy later — fix grade/drainage first.
Use fabric correctly. Fabric can reduce weed growth and keeps stone from sinking. Pin it tight and overlap seams.
Install at the right depth. 2–3" for most beds; larger stone for high-flow water zones.
Expect a little settling. Especially with rounded stone. A small top-up later can keep it looking sharp.
Driveway Gravel vs Decorative Stone
Decorative stone is primarily for beds, borders, and aesthetics. Driveways and heavy traffic areas need materials designed to compact and stay stable. If you’re building a base or driveway, you’ll usually need process/base and/or crushed stone instead of decorative gravel.
- Decorative beds: pea stone, rounds, river jacks
- Drainage swales: larger river jacks / clean stone
- Driveway/base: use sand & aggregates built for compaction
FAQ
Does decorative gravel stop weeds?
It helps when installed with proper prep and fabric, but weeds can still seed in from above over time. The best results come from good edging, correct depth, and periodic maintenance.
Will pea stone move around?
Yes — pea stone is comfortable but it migrates without containment. If you choose pea stone, use solid edging and keep it out of high-flow water zones.
