Buying mulch? First determine if you would prefer a Bark or Wood mulch.

At Grillo Services we carry bark mulches as well as wood mulches. There are no major differences between these two types of mulch. The only true difference is that they are made from different parts of the tree. Even so this does bring about some differences between the two and they are addressed below.

 Bark Mulch

Bark Mulch is made from the bark of a tree. Wood mills and other wood processing centers discard the bark covered edges of the tree because it is not useable for lumber. They in turn sell the bark portion to mulch manufacturers. Bark Mulch is considered by many to be of a higher quality than wood mulches. It is usually not dyed and is all natural. Bark Mulch does tend to be more expensive because a tree has much more wood than useable bark.

Choose Bark Mulch If

  • You want a finer mulch
  • You don’t want a dyed mulch
  • You enjoy the aroma of the mulch, such as cedar bark

Wood Mulch

Wood Mulches used to be considered as lesser quality compared to bark mulches. As the mulch making process has developed and improved wood mulch has also. Wood mulch that we produce is very fine and similar to bark mulch in many ways. Wood Mulch is used residentially and commercially. In the past wood mulch has larger pieces of wood in it which people feared could harbor termites. Our Wood Mulches are finely shredded eliminating that concern

Choose Wood Mulch If

  • You prefer the color of the dyed wood mulch
  • You want to save money, wood mulch is more cost effective

As long as you like the look and texture of a mulch that is all that matters. Mulch is only intended to beautify your landscape and this can be done with Bark or Wood Mulches.
