Sand — Three Types, Three Jobs

Concrete Sand

$62/yard

Coarse, gritty, low-silt sand that drains well and compacts firmly. The standard sand for mixing concrete, setting beneath pavers, and any application where drainage and stability matter more than smoothness.

Mason Sand

$61/yard

Fine, soft sand with a higher silt content than concrete sand. Used for mixing mortar, filling between pavers, sandboxes, horseshoe pits, and any application where you need a smooth, comfortable texture. The softest sand we carry.

Pool Sand

$60/yard

High-silt "dead" sand that packs flat and stays smooth — no sharp particles. Designed specifically as underlayment beneath above-ground pool liners and pond liners. Creates a rock-free, cushioned base that protects the liner from punctures.

Crushed Stone — Angular, Structural

3/4" Trap Rock (Crushed Stone)

$68/yard

Angular grey gravel — the standard crushed stone you see on driveways across Connecticut. DOT approved. Drains well, compacts under traffic, and won't wash away. Used under sheds, in drainage ditches, behind retaining walls, and as a structural base layer.

3/8" Grey Trap Rock

$81/yard

Smaller angular crushed stone — same material as 3/4" trap rock, just a finer size. Used for top-dressing driveways, filling gaps in existing gravel surfaces, French drain fill, and anywhere you need a tighter, more compact crushed stone surface.

1-1/4" Stone

$68/yard

Larger crushed stone for drainage applications and heavy base work. Bigger gaps between stones mean faster water flow — use it for drainage trenches, French drains, behind walls, and under structures where maximum drainage is the priority.

Base & Leveling Materials

3/4" Process Gravel

$58/yard

Crushed stone mixed with stone dust fines — compacts into a rock-hard base. The standard base material for patios, walkways, driveways, shed pads, and any hardscape project. Spread it, compact it, then set pavers or stone on top. The foundation of every good hardscape job.

Stone Dust

$59/yard

Fine crushed stone screenings used as a leveling layer on top of compacted process. Spread a thin layer, level it, and set pavers directly on top. Also used as a soil additive — the minerals in stone dust benefit vegetable gardens, especially root crops like carrots.

Screened Millings

$25/yard — Lowest Price

Recycled asphalt millings, screened for consistency. Compacts like process gravel at a fraction of the cost. Used for temporary driveways, parking pads, farm roads, and utility paths where you need a solid surface without the cost of new aggregate. Darkens and binds over time in the sun.

Specialty

Red Ballfield Clay

$75/yard

Infield clay for baseball and softball diamonds. Use it to build up mounds, repair batters boxes, patch worn infield areas, and maintain a consistent playing surface. Red color, proper moisture retention, and the right compaction for competitive play.

Which Product Do You Need?

Different projects call for different materials. Here's the quick guide.

Your Project Use This Why
Patio or walkway base 3/4" Process + Stone Dust on top Process compacts into a solid base, stone dust levels it for pavers
Driveway — new or repair 3/4" Trap Rock or Screened Millings Trap rock is the standard; millings are the budget option
French drain / drainage 1-1/4" Stone or 3/4" Trap Rock Angular stone with gaps for water flow
Under a shed or structure 3/4" Trap Rock or 3/4" Process Drains and compacts — keeps the structure level
Mixing concrete Concrete Sand Coarse, low-silt, proper aggregate for cement mixes
Mixing mortar / masonry Mason Sand Fine, smooth sand for mortar joints and brickwork
Pool liner base Pool Sand High-silt dead sand — smooth, rock-free, protects liner
Sandbox Mason Sand Soft, clean, no sharp particles — safe for kids
Baseball infield Red Ballfield Clay Proper clay composition for mounds and infield surfaces
Budget driveway or path Screened Millings Recycled asphalt at $25/yd — compacts and binds over time

Building a Patio or Walkway? Here's Your Material Stack.

The most common question we get about these products is "what do I need for a patio?" The answer is two products in a specific order:

Layer 1: 3/4" Process ($58/yd) — Spread 4–6 inches, compact it with a plate compactor, and you have a rock-solid base that won't shift or settle. This is the structural foundation of your patio.

Layer 2: Stone Dust ($59/yd) — Spread 1 inch on top of the compacted process, screed it level, and set your pavers directly on it. Stone dust gives you the fine, precise leveling that process alone can't achieve.

You can order both in the same delivery. For a typical 10x12 patio at 6 inches of process plus 1 inch of stone dust, you'd need roughly 2.5 yards of process and about half a yard of stone dust.

Need polymeric sand and paver edging? We carry those too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between concrete sand and mason sand?

Concrete sand is coarse and gritty with low silt — it drains well and is used for mixing concrete and setting pavers. Mason sand is fine and soft with higher silt — used for mortar, sandboxes, and between paver joints. Different textures for different jobs.

What's the difference between trap rock and process?

Trap rock is clean, angular crushed stone with no fines — it drains freely and doesn't compact into a solid surface. Process is crushed stone mixed with stone dust fines — it compacts into a hard, stable base. Use trap rock for drainage. Use process for base layers under patios, walkways, and driveways.

Can I use screened millings instead of process?

For driveways and utility paths, yes — millings compact and bind over time, especially in sun. For patio bases under pavers, process is the better choice because it compacts more uniformly and provides a more predictable base for leveling.

How much does a yard of aggregate weigh?

Most sand and crushed stone products weigh roughly 2,600–3,000 lbs per cubic yard. If you're picking up, make sure your vehicle can handle the weight. We can split loads across multiple trips if needed.

What sand do I use under an above-ground pool?

Pool sand — it's a high-silt dead sand that packs flat and stays smooth. It creates a rock-free cushion under the liner. Don't use concrete sand or mason sand for this — pool sand is specifically designed for liner protection.

How deep should my patio base be?

Standard residential patio base is 4–6 inches of compacted 3/4" process topped with 1 inch of stone dust for leveling. Heavier-use areas like driveways should go 6–8 inches of process.
