Description
The Darkest Brown Mulch We Carry.
Walnut Mulch is our deepest, richest brown — darker than standard brown mulch but without the stark look of black. It’s a finely shredded hardwood mulch dyed with water-based, earth-friendly colorants that are safe for kids, pets, and plants. The fine texture spreads smooth, holds its shape in beds, and delivers the kind of clean, finished appearance that makes your whole property look maintained.
Sold by the yard at our Milford landscape supply yard. Available for pickup or bulk delivery across Fairfield County, New Haven County, and much of Connecticut.
Why Mulch Matters
Mulch isn’t just for looks — although walnut delivers on that front. Here’s what a proper mulch layer actually does for your landscape.
Suppresses Weeds
A 2–3″ layer of mulch blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, dramatically reducing the number of weeds that germinate in your beds. Less weeding, less maintenance, cleaner appearance all season.
Retains Soil Moisture
Mulch acts as a barrier between the sun and your soil, slowing evaporation and keeping root zones hydrated longer between waterings. Especially critical during Connecticut’s hot, dry summer stretches.
Regulates Soil Temperature
Mulch insulates the soil — keeping it cooler in summer and warmer into fall. That stability protects root systems and extends the growing season for perennials, shrubs, and trees.
Instant Curb Appeal
Nothing transforms a property faster than fresh mulch. Walnut’s deep brown tone creates strong contrast against green lawns, light-colored siding, stone borders, and colorful plantings — making everything around it look sharper.
Where to Use Walnut Mulch
Anywhere you want a dark, refined finish. Here’s where it looks best.
Foundation Beds
The most visible beds on your property. Walnut’s dark tone creates a clean border between plantings and the house, making your landscaping look deliberate and well-maintained.
Tree Rings & Shrub Borders
A defined mulch ring around trees and shrubs protects root zones from mower damage, retains moisture, and gives the yard a finished, professional look with almost no effort.
Flower Beds & Perennial Gardens
The dark walnut color makes flowers and foliage pop — greens look greener, blooms look brighter. It’s the background that makes everything in the bed stand out.
Walkway & Patio Edging
Mulch along walkways, patios, and stone borders creates a clean transition between hardscape and landscape. The fine texture lays flat and holds a tight edge.
Commercial Properties
Office parks, retail properties, HOA common areas — walnut mulch is a go-to for commercial landscapers across Fairfield and New Haven County because it looks sharp and holds its color longer than lighter mulches.
Full Property Refresh
Mulching every bed on the property once a year is the single fastest way to make a home look like it’s been professionally landscaped. Walnut gives a consistent, unified look across the entire property.

Not Sure Which Mulch? Here’s How They Compare.
Walnut is our darkest brown option. Here’s how it stacks up against the other popular choices.
Walnut Mulch
The Look:
Deepest dark brown. Finely shredded, smooth finish. Strong contrast against greens and light colors. Our most popular dyed mulch for homeowners wanting a rich, polished look.
Brown & Black Colored Mulch
The Look:
Standard brown is lighter and warmer than walnut. Black is the boldest, starkest contrast. Same fine shredded hardwood base and earth-friendly dye — just different tones.
Natural Mulch (No Dye)
The Look:
Prefer no dye at all? Cedar, hemlock, and premium bark mulches offer natural color and texture. Cedar and hemlock are aromatic and naturally pest-resistant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is dyed mulch safe?
Yes. Our walnut mulch uses water-based, earth-friendly colorants. It’s safe for kids, pets, and plants. The dye bonds to the wood fibers and won’t leach into the soil under normal conditions.
How long does the color last?
The walnut color typically holds well for one full season. Darker dyed mulches tend to hold their appearance longer than lighter colors. Sun exposure, rain, and bed placement all affect fade rate — beds with more shade will hold color longer.
How deep should I apply mulch?
2–3 inches is ideal. Less than 2″ won’t suppress weeds effectively. More than 3–4″ can trap too much moisture against plant stems and cause problems. If you’re topping off existing mulch, 1–2″ is usually enough to restore the look.
What’s the difference between walnut and brown mulch?
Walnut is our darkest brown — deeper and richer than our standard brown colored mulch. Both are finely shredded hardwood with earth-friendly dye. If you want a warmer, lighter brown, go with standard brown. If you want the richest, deepest brown we carry, walnut is the move.
How much does walnut mulch cost?
Walnut mulch is $41 per cubic yard. Delivery charges vary by town and are applied at checkout. View all pricing on our pricing page.
Do you deliver mulch?
Yes — across Fairfield County, New Haven County, and much of Connecticut, plus Westchester County, NY. Add mulch to your cart, select your town at checkout, and the delivery rate is applied automatically. View delivery rates.
Can I pick it up?
Yes. Our Milford yard at 1183 Oronoque Road is open during regular business hours. Drive in and we’ll load your truck or trailer. Check hours and directions.
Do you have bulk pricing?
Yes. We offer 20-yard bulk walnut mulch delivery at a better per-yard rate. For contractor jobs or large properties, call (203) 877-5070 to discuss volume and logistics.
Will the dye stain my driveway or walkway?
Fresh dyed mulch can temporarily transfer color to concrete, pavers, or light-colored surfaces if it gets wet before it cures. To avoid this, keep mulch off hard surfaces during spreading and blow or sweep any stray pieces before watering or rain.
