Description

Not Just Dirt. A Purpose-Built Soil Blend.

A lot of what gets sold as “topsoil” is rough site dirt or unscreened fill with rocks, roots, and debris mixed in. This is different. Our screened topsoil is a blend of native Connecticut farm loam and organic leaf compost, screened to 1/2″ or less for a smooth, consistent, ready-to-use product. The loam gives it structure and body. The compost gives it color, organic matter, and workability. It’s the kind of topsoil you actually want to work with — not the kind you have to fight.

Produced and blended at our 20-acre facility in Milford, CT. Sold by the yard for pickup or delivery across Connecticut. Backed by 30+ years in the landscape supply business.

What Makes This Topsoil Different

The blend, the screening, and the consistency. Here’s what you’re actually getting.

Farm Loam Base

Native Connecticut farm loam gives this topsoil real body and structure. It holds its shape for grading, supports root systems, and doesn’t wash away after the first rain like lightweight fill.

Enriched With Leaf Compost

The compost component adds organic matter, darkens the color, and improves the soil’s ability to hold moisture and support plant growth. This isn’t dead dirt — it has biological activity.

Screened to 1/2″ or Less

Rocks, roots, clumps, and oversized debris are removed. What’s left is a smooth, uniform material that rakes flat, levels evenly, and gives you a clean finished surface every time.

Dark, Rich Appearance

The compost blend gives this topsoil a visibly darker, richer color than straight loam. It looks like quality soil because it is. Your finished project looks better from day one.

Easy to Spread and Grade

The screened texture means less time fighting chunks and more time finishing the job. It comes off the pile clean, spreads with a rake, and settles into place without reworking.

Works for Homeowners and Contractors

Homeowners get a product they can actually handle themselves. Contractors get a consistent, reliable material that loads well, dumps clean, and makes every job look more professional.

What You Can Use It For

Screened topsoil is the most versatile bulk material we sell. If the project involves soil, this probably fits.

Lawn Prep — Seed & Sod

The foundation of every good lawn. Spread 3–4″ of screened topsoil, grade it smooth, and you’ve got the ideal surface for seeding or laying sod. The compost in the blend gives new grass a nutrient-rich start.

Grading & Leveling

Smooth out uneven ground, correct drainage slopes, or reshape sections of the yard. The screened texture rakes flat and holds its grade better than rough fill or unscreened dirt.

Filling Low Spots & Depressions

Puddles in the yard, sunken areas around foundations, settling after construction — screened topsoil fills and levels without introducing rocks or debris into your lawn.

Garden Beds & Planting Areas

Use as a base layer in new garden beds or blend into existing planting areas to improve soil volume and quality. The compost component gives it more organic matter than straight loam.

Post-Construction Cleanup

After excavation, grading, or any construction work, screened topsoil is the standard material for restoring the top layer before planting, seeding, or sodding. It gives you a finished surface to work from.

Yard Reshaping & Build-Up

Need to raise a section of yard, build up around a patio, or create gentle slopes for drainage? Topsoil is the structural material for that work — it compacts well and stays where you put it.

Tree & Shrub Backfill

Backfill around new trees and shrubs with screened topsoil for a clean finish and solid root support. The compost in the blend gives transplants organic matter right at the root zone.

General Soil Improvement

If your existing soil is thin, rocky, sandy, or compacted, adding screened topsoil on top or blending it in improves both the growing conditions and the finished appearance of your property.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your topsoil made of?

A blend of native Connecticut farm loam and organic leaf compost, screened to 1/2″ or less. The loam provides structure and the compost adds organic matter, color, and workability.

Can I use this topsoil for a new lawn?

Yes — it’s one of the most common uses. Spread 3–4″ over the area, grade it smooth, and it’s ready for seed or sod. The compost in the blend gives new grass a better start than straight loam.

Is this good for gardens?

It works well for general garden beds and planting areas. If you’re building a vegetable garden or raised beds and want a richer growing medium, our Organic Garden Mix is a better fit for that.

How is this different from fill dirt?

Fill dirt is unscreened and often contains rocks, clay, roots, and debris. Screened topsoil is a refined product blended with compost and screened for consistency. If you need cheap volume to fill a hole, fill works. If you need to grow something or create a finished surface, you need topsoil.

How much does topsoil cost?

Screened topsoil is $45 per cubic yard. Delivery charges vary by town and are applied at checkout. View all pricing on our pricing page.

Do you deliver topsoil?

Yes — across much of Connecticut and Westchester County, NY. Add topsoil to your cart, select your town at checkout, and the delivery rate is applied automatically. View delivery rates.

Can I pick it up?

Yes. Our Milford yard at 1183 Oronoque Road is open during regular business hours. Drive in and we’ll load your truck or trailer. Check hours and directions.

Do you have bulk pricing for larger orders?

Yes. We offer 20-yard bulk delivery loads at a better per-yard rate. For contractor jobs or large projects, call (203) 877-5070 to discuss volume and logistics.

We do that too. If you need a specific ratio of topsoil, compost, sand, or other materials for a particular project, visit our Custom Soil page or call us to discuss what you need.
